1. The sidebar - the most popular and well known
Everybody has seen it on the right side of a blog. Even if it might not be the most converting form on a site, it is always there; that's a lot of views you can capitalize on.
A few tips on making sure you get the most out of it.
- Add it to the top of your sidebar. Like you and me, people have been getting used to lots of noise on the sidebar, which could be because of ads or irrelevant links. So make it count, put it higher up!
- Make it stand out with a compelling offer and a different background or colors that catch the eye.
2. Splash Page
Distraction-free, the splash page covers the entire page before the reader gets to your site or blog post. It allows you to make a direct and concise call to action to your reader to join your list. Navigation can be displayed at the bottom so that your content is what is getting the attention. The splash page is ahead of getting to your page; this means your readers aren't getting interrupted while you showcase the benefits of joining your list. You can display some reader's feedback you got or everything they will gain by subscribing.
3. The Welcome Mat
Halfway between a splash page and a pop-up, the welcome mat will cover most of your content but won't have any navigation. It can be dismissed like a pop-up but appears right away when your reader lands on your page.
4. In The Footer
If your readers have made it to the bottom of your post, they are likely to like your content and want to read more.
Make sure your form stands out, like for the sidebar display, so that your reader doesn't miss it.
5. In Your Post - Multiple Times!
Forms are some of the best converting when in a post. Add a lead magnet, like a freebie download or a free course, to your blog posts. Why does it work? Because you can tailor your offer to the topic your reader is on, aka very compelling! Placement-wise, toward the top is always better. Still, if your visitor made it to the end of your articles, well, they are highly likely to want more content from you!
Don't be shy to have two lead magnet forms on one post, one at the top and one at the bottom. Hubspot does a great job of it here by having them looking different. The top download might be a link; the bottom a full-on form with graphics.
6. Bottom corners
It is less intrusive than a pop-up but still dynamic enough to catch the eye. The box may slide in or have a little alert icon for your visitor to open. We are getting more and more use to these little chat boxes hanging out at the bottom of our screens always available. To advantage of it and ask your readers more details about their habits and what they want to read and get their email!
7. The Exit Intent Pop up
You wouldn't believe how converting this one is. Of course, every site is different, and you should test it out, but there is something about being asked right as you leave if you want to be kept in the loop. Make it a great offer.
8. Floating Box
This is our new favorite for bloggers. The bottom-right corner box is excellent, but it takes real estate on what usually contains ads that you do not want to cover. So this little box floating on the left side of your post doesn't hide much. And it scrolls with the reader, so it is always in view, and it is unusual (read catches the eye). Make it a special offer, something different than what you might already have in your sidebar. The offer could be more specific to your post, sound more time-sensitive.
9. The floating bar - at the top or bottom of the screen
Fixed to the top or the bottom, it never goes out of the screen. Making it stand out with a different background, your readers cannot miss it.
10. Home Page
Lead magnets on home pages are common. Offer your audience something that resonates with them, and you might grow your email list more than you are expecting.
11. About Page
Lots of people go to the about page! They want to know about who you are and how you can help them. You could capture your visitors right here!
In a nutshell, there are so many great places to add your sign-up form. Don't be afraid to have multiple forms and offers on a page. Your reader might not see all of them or get convinced by one more than the other. It doesn't take much time, stop losing subscribers and start collecting valuable emails today!
